Erica Baum, the artist whose work appears on the cover and inside this issue, treats words as objects, translating words into their purest visual element. Her photographs draw attention to idiosyncratic detail such as typeface, random markings, handwriting, and in their framing of these details, they transform ordinary texts into comic, poetic, mysterious artifacts.
     Erica Baum has an M.F.A. in photography from the Yale School of Art. She is represented by the gallery D'Amelio Tetras. Her work has been reviewed in ArtForum and in Art in America. She lives and works in New York City.
